Jane Seymour supports Art of Giving's cause

Jane Seymour supports Art of Giving in its mission to raise funds for worldwide causes and will be exhibiting at the Saatchi Gallery exhibition in October 2010.

Jane Seymour, Golden Globe, Emmy Award winning actor, and OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) recipient, began painting nearly two decades ago.  Prompted by a period of personal challenge, her art became the expression of a very private healing process. She emerged from this experience as an accomplished, passionate painter.  Seymour sketches and paints at her Malibu studio, on movie sets and on her travels.  She has created an intimate world of delicate watercolors and colorful vibrant oil paintings.

Her love of art began at an early age in England, where family gifts were always created rather than purchased, so that the true spirit of giving of one’s self was expressed.  This early practice developed into a lifetime of charitable work. Seymour continues to give through her art work to charities which help children in need including City Hearts, Childhelp, Camp Soaring Eagle, The American Red Cross, Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation among many others.

The late Anthony Quinn’s artwork featuring at Art of Giving

Examining Quinn’s many expressions of creativity together—his art and acting—we can see that he was a creative genius…" Donald Kuspit, Art Critic.

Art of Giving are delighted to announce that works by the late Anthony Quinn will be exhibited at the Art of Giving event at the Saatchi Gallery on the 8-9 October 2010.

Many people are familiar with Anthony Quinn because of his prolific acting career and his achievements in directing, theatre and writing. But Quinn also has an identity outside of the world of show business. His natural talent for painting and drawing was evident from an early age. In his youth he won several art competitions and studied drafting under Frank Lloyd Wright. Despite having never attended art school, his interest in the arts continued to grow and he taught himself to paint by visiting museums and galleries and reading books on modern art.

Drawings form a large proportion of his body of work, their simplicity and bold lines giving them a vulnerable, naive quality. But even more striking are his bold oil paintings, so rich in colour that they are impossible to ignore. The geometric shapes are formed of layers of contrasting hues, sometimes subtly blended but also laid thickly and brashly on top of one another, providing a real feast for the eyes. The sumptuous textures of the paint itself add depth to his pieces, drawing the viewer in. Portraits form the main body of his work, although there are paintings with more abstract qualities that are less recognisable as human forms.

Quinn’s Mexican ancestry influenced the style and palette of his artworks, as his lengthy visits to Africa and the Middle East in the 1970s and 80s. The amalgamation of these various sources of inspiration is what makes his work so unique and exciting.

Quinn was not just a master of two-dimension. Whilst working on film sets in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, he managed to parallel his life as an actor with his passion for art. Between shooting, he often passed the time by sculpting stones and pieces of wood found on-location, which he later enlarged as decorations for his home. He was once quoted as saying: “If I were left alone on an island, I would reconstruct the rocks. I have a need to say ‘I was here’”. Visitors to his home always admired his sculptural pieces and soon he began to receive requests to produce them for public sale. His first one-man exhibition of sculptural works was in Honolulu, Hawaii, where every piece in the show was sold on the opening night.

And now, 25 major exhibitions and several awards later, his works remain in public and private collections worldwide. The Art of Giving is lucky enough to be showcasing some fine examples of Quinn’s paintings and sculptural works. With a share of the proceeds going to the Art of Giving charities, this is the perfect opportunity to become the proud owner of this artist’s incredible legacy.
